Leadership or Scrum Masters own all the P&T.

Solution

The team owns & administers all of its P&T.

Processes & Templates — Shifting Ownership to the Team

At this stage, we want the team to own and manage its processes and templates (P&T).

Currently, leadership or Scrum Masters often control all P&T, creating dependency and slowing the team down.

We face a crossroads: Should the team own everything, including agile ceremonies, or should a Scrum Master remain responsible?

Two Paths of Ownership

Team-Owned

The team takes full responsibility for processes and templates, including ceremonies, and adapts them as it matures.

Scum Master-Owned

The Scrum Master maintains control of processes and templates, ensuring consistency and continuity while the team gradually learns.

Our Recommendation

Start with the Scrum Master owning P&T, then gradually decentralize ownership as the team and work matures.

Consider transferring ownership when:

  • The team reliably runs its own ceremonies.

  • Process documents are referenced and updated without being asked.

  • The Scrum Master can move into a coaching or strategic role.

Ownership Selector — Deciding When to Shift

We use the Ownership Selector template to assess readiness.

Bottom Line:

If we get 3 NOs, then the Scrum Master’s got to go…

Go on to support larger initiatives or other teams in the organization. hehe.

Don't build endless dependency on Scrum Masters.

Build an independent team.
